Cathedral Point Day Hike: 3962m is on Mt. Kilimanjaro's Shira Plateau. Shira Plateau is one of the most fascinating and scenic areas on Mount Kilimanjaro and it is the oldest peak of Mount Kilimanjaro raised to 3962m. It is well adventurous landscape to visit and explore the ridges and moorland. Shira is a large, rocky plateau whose landscape was shaped by the lava that came from Mount Kilimanjaro erupted when it was an active volcano. The Shira plateau allows you to get a taste of this spectacular mountain and its many ecosystems and also provides a stunning view of the perpetually snow-capped summit of the world's tallest free-standing Mountain.
Your short day-hiking trip will start early in the morning at your hotel either in Moshi/Arusha and drive to the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro in which you will drive through the rich agriculture area at the base of mountain to Londorosi gate. After all registrations you will be driven moving steadily up through indigenous Montane rain forest, home of variety of animals and birdlife, with the help of the guide, ranger and driver you can spot different types of wildlife like colobus monkey, blue monkeys, velvet monkey, and different types of birds.
Then drive to Murum barrier at 3400m where the hike will start toward Cathedral Point Summit. The hiking trail takes 3 hrs. to the view of Shira plateau, stunning view of Mount Kilimanjaro peak and finally to Shira cathedral Point. Shira plateau shows the remains of an ancient caldera, a volcanic crater that expired around half million years ago and is one of the world heritage sites. In the evening hikers walk back to Morum Barrier gate, where the vehicle will be waiting to transfer back to your accommodation in Moshi/Arusha.
