Overview Mount Meru which is located in Arusha National Park (offers some of the most spectacular scenery and variety of wildlife if you proceed to Mount Meru trekking tour). Mount Meru is a challenging hike due to its steepness. Hikers are accompanied by an armed ranger due to the abundance of wildlife on the lower slopes, particularly in Arusha National Park. Mount Meru is a great hiking option for those who want to face a hiking challenge in the mountains of Tanzania and feel like they are in nature. Mount Meru Trek can be your option if you are unable to climb Kilimanjaro due to its altitude and difficulty as each mountain in Tanzania has its own set of challenges.
Itinerary
Day 1: Momella gate to Miriakamba Hut
Distance covered: 6km, Approx. time taken: 5 hours.
You will leave your hotel at 08:00. m. in Arusha/Moshi and drive about one to half an hour to Momella Gate, the starting point of the first day of the Mt. Meru Trek. After check-in, start your trek accompanied by an armed ranger who will help you escape from wild animals in Arusha National Park and generally towards Mount Meru. Along the route you will enjoy spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the Momella Lakes. You will find animals like Cape buffalo
, giraffes, warthogs and bushbuck and many others. Your trek ends on the first day at Miriakamba Hut, where you will spend the night.
Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut
Distance covered: 7km, Approx. time taken: 4 hours.
The second day's hike takes you along the steep path along the saddle ridge. Along the way, you'll have stunning views of Mount Meru's crater, Cinder Cone and Little Meru Peak. Keep an eye out for wildlife and amazing wildflowers as you walk through the forest. Common animals include buffalo, the black and white colobus monkey. Your hike ends at Saddle Hut, where you will spend the night. After resting at camp, embark on a hour acclimatization hike to Little Meru, then return to Saddle Hut.
Day 3: Saddle Hut to Summit to Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate
Distance covered: 28km, Approx. time taken: 13-14 hours.
We start early in the morning at least 7:30 am. to walk steeply from Rhino Point to Cobra Point. We reach the summit of Mount Meru (4566m) in time for sunrise. There is a chance to see the peak of Kilimanjaro above the clouds. The final part of the hike follows a spectacular narrow ridge line between the steep inner cliffs and the sloping outer wall of the crater. We take a short break and brunch at Saddle Hut before continuing down to Miriakamba Hut and finally to Momella
Gate. The transfer back to Arusha will meet you at Momella Gate and take you back to your accommodation.
