AN OVERVIEW ABOUT 7-DAY UMBWE ROUTE TREKKING KILIMANJARO
The Umbwe Route is known for its direct and steep ascent, making it the toughest route on the mountain. It is shorter than other routes but offers a challenging experience for experienced trekkers. The route is less crowded and provides a sense of solitude, but its rapid ascent demands good fitness and proper acclimatization.
Day 1: Arrival in Moshi/Arusha
- Transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport to your hotel in Moshi/Arusha.
- Pre-climb briefing with your guide, reviewing the itinerary, safety, and gear check.
- Overnight at your hotel with dinner included.
Day 2: Moshi/Arusha to Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp
- Elevation: 1,650m (Umbwe Gate) to 2,850m (Umbwe Camp)
- Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
- After registration at Umbwe Gate, begin the steep climb through the rainforest.
- The dense forest provides a beautiful and atmospheric environment, with chances to spot wildlife such as monkeys and birds.
- Overnight at Umbwe Camp with dinner
Day 3: Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp.
- Elevation: 2,850m to 3,950m
- Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
- Trek through increasingly rocky and rugged terrain, leading you to the Barranco Valley.
- The descent into the valley and the famous Barranco Wall provides dramatic views.
- Overnight at Barranco Camp with dinner.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp.
- Elevation: 3,950m to 4,035m
- Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
- Hike through the Barranco Wall and then continue on a moderate ascent to Karanga Camp.
- The day’s journey provides more stunning views and is perfect for acclimatization.
- Overnight at Karanga Camp with dinner.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
- Elevation: 4,035m to 4,640m
- Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
- The trail is steep as you ascend to Barafu Camp, where you’ll rest and prepare for your summit attempt.
- Overnight at Barafu Camp, with an early dinner and rest in preparation for the final ascent.
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
- Elevation: 4,640m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak) and descent to 3,080m (Mweka Camp)
- Hiking Time: 10–14 hours (Ascent and Descent)
- Begin the summit climb around midnight, reaching Uhuru Peak by sunrise
- Celebrate at the summit before descending to Mweka Camp for an overnight rest.
- Overnight at Mweka Camp with dinner.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi/Arusha
- Elevation: 3,080m to 1,650m
- Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
- Complete the descent through the lush rainforest back to Mweka Gate.
- Receive your summit certificate and return to Moshi/Arusha for a celebration dinner.
